The name ''chemical reaction engineering'' has been given to the branch of chemical engineering that focusses on the conditions which make for useful chemical transformation. Within this subdiscipline there are studies related primarily to the static and dynamic behavior of the reactor and of these the more analytical are rich in mathematical problems. In this paper the preliminary considerations of stoicheiometry, thermodynamics and chemical kinetics are outlined as background to a discussion of the batch reactor. The characteristic problems of other important reactor types will be taken up in a sequel.
