We give a trace formula for the action of an automorphism of a curve over a discrete valuation ring on the stalk of the sheaf of vanishing cycles. Our formula expresses the trace as a difference of the Artin character of the generic fiber and its variant of the special fiber. Using this formula, we obtain a new proof of the semi-continuity of the Swan conductor.
