Denote by \(M^+_ n\) the set of nonnegative matrices \(A=(a_{ij})\), by \(A^{[r]}\) the matrix \((a^ r_{ij})\) for \(r>0\). The paper characterizes the limit \(\mu\) (A) of \(\rho (A^{[r]})^{1/r}\) as \(r\to \infty\) and bounds \(\rho\) (A) by a multiple of \(\mu\) (A).
