Let I be a cloed ideal of a \(C^*\)-algebra A. The author gives an elementary proof of the fact that \(A^*\cong I^*\oplus (A/I)^*\) (\(\ell_ 1\)-sum) where \((A/I)^*\) is canonically identified with \(I^ 0\) in \(A^*\).
