A Wielandt type deflation is described for a matrix pencil A-\(\lambda\) B with singular B. It subtracts low rank matrices constructed from the eigenvectors of successive subproblems, until a problem with a regular B matrix is obtained. The behaviour of the deflation when rounding errors are present is discussed, and it is shown how symmetry can be preserved.
