The author compares two unifying principles in real analysis: those formulated by \textit{H. Leinfelder} [Real Anal. Exch. 8, 511--518 (1983; Zbl 0529.26002)] and by \textit{P. Shanahan} [Am. Math. Mon. 79, 895--898 (1972; Zbl 0258.26003)]. In the first part of the paper he shows that both principles are equivalent. In the second part he uses the principles for simplifying proofs of some theorems on monotonicity and Lipschitz condition of real functions.
