\textit{A. Hadjidimos} [Int. J. Comput. Math. 14, 355-369 (1983; Zbl 0517.65012)] proposed the generalized accelerated overrelaxation method which generalizes the basic iterative methods for the solution of linear systems \(Ax=b\). The difficult problem of determining the various optimum parameters remains open. In this paper some new theoretical results concerning the convergence of the method when A is a real symmetric positive definite or an L-matrix are obtained. Some applications and examples are given.
