The paper is concerned with complex valued symmetric matrices C. Firstly, a rather simple expression for the spectral norm, \(\| C\|\), is derived. Using that expression, secondly, sufficient conditions are established for C to be strongly stable, that is, \(\| C\| \leq 1\). Finally, the strong stability of some difference scheme due to \textit{P. D. Lax} and \textit{B. Wendroff} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 17, 381-398 (1964; Zbl 0233.65050)] is proven.
