The numbers of the roots of det(B-\(\lambda\) A) in different portions of the real axis are determined, where A and B are Hermitian matrices and B is positive definite. The result is an extension of a theorem by \textit{X. Pan} and \textit{H. Dai} [ibid. 35, 93-96 (1985; Zbl 0554.65026)].
