\textit{P. J. Cohen} [Am. J. Math. 82, 213-226 (1960; Zbl 0099.256)] established a general theorem about homomorphisms of the group algebra of a locally compact abelian group. The present paper has a version of the theorem for commutative *-hypergroups.
