The smooth yield surface introduced by \textit{P. V. Lade} and \textit{J. M. Duncan} [Proc. ASCE SM 99, 793 ff. (1973)] for the modeling of soils is shown to belong to a family of surfaces which also includes as a special case a recently introduced surface [the author, ibid. 11, 281-284 (1984)] capable of being fitted to triaxial test data consistent with the frictional theory of Coulomb. This generalization permits the convenient definition of surfaces for which variations in the size and shape of successive cross-sections in the deviatoric plane may be specified independently.
