If A is a commutative local noetherian ring with maximal ideal M, then the colength of an M-primary ideal Q is defined to be the ordinary length of A/Q: \(L(Q)=\ell (A/Q)\). In this paper, the author studies the quotient \(L(Q^ 2)/L(Q)\), and finds upper and lower bounds of it for different ideals Q and in different rings A.
