Let M be a closed, oriented 3-manifold. If we form \(M\times S^ 1\) and perform surgery on the curve \(*\times S^ 1\) with either of two possible framings, we obtain a 4-manifold, called the spin of M. We show that the oriented homotopy type of a spun 3-manifold depends only on its fundamental group and the choice of framing.
