The main article, written in 1929, is a discoursive but decidedly dogmatic defence of abstraction and the axiomatic method within algebra. This notwithstanding, one of his morals does appeal: ''One must not forget that the method is just that - a method, and as such, it must be applied to something.'' The comments by Chandler and Magnus following Hasse's essay strike this reviewer as more interesting and more incisive. They critically ''examine... how successful the ideas of Hasse have been. (They) do this not only with respect to the carefully worked out main thesis... but also with regard to the asides which may represent attitudes rather than well-formulated principles.''
