The analogue of the Bruhat decomposition for reductive, algebraic monoids is established. A monoid version of the Tits system and general formulation of row reduction is obtained. In computations, the Weyl group W is replaced by a certain finite inverse monoid \({\mathcal R}\) with unit group W. Some results of Putcha are reproved concerning cross-section lattices.
