The structure associated with the equations which define a composite (large scale) system determines a canonical decomposition in subsystems. The stability and controllability of the overall system are studied using this decomposition. Sufficient conditions for the overall system to be stable or controllable, when each of the subsystems is, respectively, stable or controllable, are found.
