The following theorem which resolves affirmatively one of the outstanding conjectures in Kähler geometry is proved: Theorem. Suppose X is a compact Kähler-Einstein manifold of non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature and positive Ricci curvature. Then X is isometric to a compact Hermitian symmetric space.
