This paper is concerned with the numerical approximation via finite element methods of the classical Helmholtz equation in three dimensions with a source term. Under a geometrical condition on the energy propagation, the problem is reduced to a simpler one which is treated by finite element methods. Numerical results are given showing the reduced computational cost of the methods.
