This paper gives a condition that loop on a hyperbolic surface be homotopic to a power of a simple loop in terms of the trace of the corresponding isometry of the universal cover of the surface. This yields an algorithm for testing simplicity of loops as well as providing a universal lower bound for the lengths of loops which are not homotopic to powers of simple loops.
