The author introduces the notion of the singular direction of wave front sets for distributions and proves the invariance of the singular direction under the elliptic equivalent transformation. A kind of Fourier integral operators, which ensure such invariance, are also investigated. The results obtained are applied to the propagation of singularities for a class of differential operators with multiple characteristics. The theorems obtained in this paper have been proved in a fine way. The paper also contains some very useful and interesting remarks.
