This paper discusses the relationship between projective representations of groups, twisted group rings and groups of central type. While the author does consider infinite groups at times, it still seems to the reviewer that essentially all of this material was known to \textit{I. Schur} [J. Reine. Angew. Math. 127, 20-50 (1904; JFM 35.0155.01)].
