Let V be the 5-dimensional real irreducible SO(3)-representation and let S(V) be its unit sphere. The author shows that the action of SO(3) on S(V) extends to a continuous but nonsmooth action of \(SL(3,{\mathbb{R}})\). Questions of this sort are motivated by the author's study of real analytic \(SL(n,{\mathbb{R}})\)-actions on spheres [cf. Tôhoku Math. J., II. Ser. 33, 145-175 (1981; Zbl 0542.57032)].
