The well known result that a geodesic flow on a two dimensional compact manifold of negative Gaussian curvature is globally exponentially unstable is generalized and applied to the plane three body problem. It is shown that such an exponential instability and hence chaotic behavior exists for the three body problem but not for the two body problem.
