A finite element formulation for solving general three-dimensional consolidation problems using variational concepts is presented. The formulation involves coupled displacement and pore pressure fields and has been numerically implemented to analyze boundary value problems of axisymmetric (torsionless) and plane strain configurations. Three numerical examples are discussed.
