There is an error in Section 4 of our article in (*) ibid. 72, 267-284 (1983; Zbl 0555.57003). In the statements of the ''characterization of manifolds'' and 1.1-1.3 of (*), ''homology manifold'' should be replaced by ''homology manifold of local index 1''. Details will appear elsewhere.
