A slender elastic beam of uniform density and finite length is lifted by a vertical force. The problem is governed by the location of the lifting force and a nondimensional parameter K which is a measure of density and length to flexural rigidity. Linear analysis shows the beam bifurcates from the straight, upright configuration if K is larger than a certain critical value. For large deformations the governing equations are integrated numerically to yield the maximum moment, force and displacements.
