This paper deals with the estimation of the quasi-static force exerted upon an offshore conical structure by a moving rubble ice ridge. The strength of the rubble ice is attributed to cohesion and friction. The analysis, based on a kinematical method of failure mechanisms consisting of rigid bodies, yields the ice force due to shear failure of the ice ridge. This force is found to depend on the shear strength characteristics of the ice (given by friction angle and cohesion) and on the form of the cone.
