After a brief historical review of combustion science, the role of asymptotics is elucidated by a discussion of the hydrodynamical limit, the small Mach number approximation, Damkohler number asymptotics, and activation energy asymptotics. The importance of the latter is emphasized by examining its application to flame propagation, stability, explosions, and diffusion flames.
