The principal result of this paper is that every even integer is a difference of two coprime non-square powerful numbers in infinitely many different ways. A similar result for odd integers has also been obtained by the authors, in work to appear [C. R. Math. Acad. Sci., Soc. R. Can. 10, No. 2, 71--76 (1988; Zbl 0646.10006)]. The proof depends on properties of the Pell equation. See also their paper in Fibonacci Q. 25, 34--37 (1987; Zbl 0605.10008).
