In this paper, an algebraic system is proposed for obtaining data models. This system uses binary mappings between data items and derives a set of theorems which can be used to optimally realize a data model - relational, hierarchical, or network. Hybrid data models can also be obtained. This method can manually be employed even for a large number of data items. A database designer can have a comprehensive and compact view of a large data base in the form of algebraic expressions.
