The theorem of the title concerns the spectral decomposition of an integral operator. In the course of his study of integral equations, D. Hilbert provided a proof in 1904. In the following year, his student, E. Schmidt (1876-1959) provided a second proof in his doctoral thesis. The author discusses their formulations and proofs of the theorem.
