In a duality between the kinematics of line elements and the kinematics of area elements, the role of the deformation gradient in the former is taken over by its adjugate in the latter. The author shows that a considerable insight is gained by means of a polar decomposition of the adjugate of the deformation gradient. For volume elements, a kinematical insight is also given from the author's theory.
