For purposes of analysis and approximation of potential nonlinear boundary value problems, it is shown, from the natural setting of subdifferential equations, how variational principles are systematically generated via duality processes. In particular, complementary, mixed, augmented Lagrangian and hybrid variational formulations in elastostatics are discussed.
