An integrated axiomatic approach to the existence of ordinal and cardinal utility functions (Q1085767)

This paper presents a simplified and integrated axiomatic development of both ordinal and cardinal utility theory. The approach is simplified over existing techniques since the proofs of the basic theorems require only a limited knowledge of algebra. The approach is integrated since cardinal utility theory is constructed from the existence of an ordinal utility theory. The contribution of the paper is pedagogical.
