In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of record values in populations with increasing dimension. Asymptotic normality of \(\mu_ n\), number of record values that occurred until the nth observation is derived and a simpler proof for \textit{M. C. K. Yang}'s result [J. Appl. Probab. 12, 148-154 (1975; Zbl 0306.60068)] on the limit distribution of the sequence of inter-record times when the population increases geometrically is given. Similar properties are established when the population has a random dimension.
