A systematic numerical experiment has been carried out on various continuous pressure elements, for studying incompressible flows in two dimensions of space. One element appeared sufficiently accurate and efficient and the most susceptible to be generalized to the three- dimensional case. This has been done effectively in an efficient way using the penalty method and an approximate static condensation coupled with the Newton- Raphson method for the nonlinear case and without recourse to any numerical quadrature. Three-dimensional driven cavity and duct flows have been presented and compared with results from other references.
