The author presents a six-element commutative semigroup S with a proper involution * such that (S,*) cannot be *-embedded into any ring with proper involution. (A semigroup involution * is called proper if \(aa^*=ab^*=bb^*\) implies \(a=b\) for all a,b; a ring involution is called proper if \(aa^*=0\) implies 0 for all a.)
