This paper provides an extension to a paper by the authors [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 277, 173-201 (1983; Zbl 0513.33001)]. The main results are utilised to good effect in obtaining new identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type and to solving the connection coefficient problem of a set of polynomials closely related to the discrete q-ultraspherical polynomials. The properties of the basic differential operator are employed in establishing the main results.
