Bäcklund transformations are applied to study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, second harmonics generation and self-induced transparency. Their simplest solutions which can be expressed in terms of elementary functions have been derived and proved that they are periodic up to a phase factor. Application to periodic pulse propagation in an optical waveguide is discussed in some detail.
