Let us consider the differential expression of higher order \[ A(x,D_ x)=\sum_{| \alpha | =2m}a_{\alpha}D_ x^{\alpha}+\sum_{| \alpha | <\ell}b_{\alpha}(x)D_ x^{\alpha}, \] which satisfies certain ellipticity condition. An asymptotic expansion of the spectral function e(\(\lambda\),x,y) of the operator A is derived. The influence of the coefficients \(b_{\alpha}(x)\) on the validity of this expansion is studied.
