The author gives a new construction of the topological degree for mappings of monotone type, based essentially on the Leray-Schauder degree. A related concept can be found in the paper of \textit{F. E. Browder} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 9, 1-39 (1983; Zbl 0533.47053)]. Application to existence and surjectivity theorems are given.
