Under some assumptions, certain inequalities in terms of the first two moments are shown to be valid for distributions with monotone hazard rate or monotone mean residual life. (The paper has one or two minor inaccuracies including misprints; in particular, the right hand side of (3) should be \(\epsilon (1-\epsilon e)^{-1}\) instead of \((1-\epsilon e)^{-1}\), \(S_ k(x)\) in (7) should read \(S_ k(0)\), and in the summary the assumption required by the first inequality that \(\epsilon <e^{-1}\) has remained to be stated.)
