A general and complete exposition of the dynamics of populations with changing vital rates is given in the discrete time formulation. Explicit expressions for the age distribution as well as for the generalized reproductive values are obtained. Comparison is made with results of the author, Demography 23, 451-461 (1986) and \textit{S. Preston} and \textit{A. Coale}, Pop. Index 48, 217-259 (1982).
