In the present paper it is shown that every permutation in the alternating group \(A_ n\) is the product of two elements of order 5 provided \(n\geq 15\) or \(n=5,6,7,10,11,12,13\). The exceptions in the remaining cases are determined. The results for \(n=14\) correct an erroneous statement in a paper by \textit{J. L. Brenner} and \textit{J. Riddell} [Am. Math. Mon. 84, 39-40 (1977; Zbl 0445.05002)].
