The matrix \(\left( \begin{matrix} x\quad 1\\ 1\quad y\end{matrix} \right)\) remains invertible when the diagonal (x,y) varies over two open quadrants in the plane. The authors extend this observation to such tridiagonal matrices of arbitrary size.
