A mathematical description of Segal's cosmological model in the framework of conformal group actions is presented. The relation between conformal and causal group actions on time-orientable Lorentzian manifolds is analysed and several examples are discussed. A criterion for the conformality of a map between Lorentzian manifolds is given. The results are applied to Segal's ''conformal compactification'' of Minkowski space. Furthermore, the ''unitary formulation'' of Segal's cosmology is regarded.
