The article is devoted to the following problem of \textit{E. W. Cheney} [Can. Math. Soc. Conf. Proc. 3, 391 (1983)]: If U and V are proximinal subspaces in a Banach space X and \(U+V\) is closed, does it follow that \(U+V\) is proximinal? A negative answer to this problem is given and some positive results are obtained.
