The observer gain matrix L is computed to assign the Gershgorin discs associated with the rows of the matrix A-LC. It is shown by a counterexample that the observability of (C,A) is not sufficient to guarantee the existence of such an L. Necessary and sufficient conditions are stated. For a \(3\times 3\) matrix A an example is computed.
