Iterative methods such as successive overrelaxation have been a powerful technique for solving algebraic systems arising from discretization of elliptic partial differential equations. Their use has largely been confined to finite difference approximations on uniform grids. In this note we demonstrate that grid irregularities have deleterious effects on the convergence of these methods.
