In order to characterize the equilibrium positions of a system inside an equilibrium domain, direction elements are defined. These follow from the response of the autonomous system in such a position to small disturbances by impulses, which effect initial velocities of the system. The direction elements establish for the equilibrium domain a direction field, which gives information about the different behaviour of the system in the equilibrium positions of the domain. Examples are also considered.
